SCBU

My girls spent 19 days in SCBU.

They moved from the heated incubator to an open cot with a heated blanket.
They had the heated blanket removed. Came off heart monitors. Came off apnoea mats.
Moved from tube feedings to a mixture of tube feeds/breastfeeds with top ups.
Began to breastfeed exclusively during the day.

Day 16: I spent 1 night in the expressing room so I could establish breastfeeding during the night. I was supposed to do it on my own, but Josh showed up around 2am after his gig and after that, he never left our side.
We then spent 3 nights in the parents room, and had the girls in there with us as well. And the girls got their feeding tubes taken out!!!

Finally, on day 19 (Christmas Eve) we were all given permission to go home. Woohoooo!

Almost 2 weeks old!

I can't believe my baby girls have been in this world for almost 2 weeks already!

They are now both in open cots and we are busy working on establishing breastfeeding, so they are officially known as "feeders and growers".  Word on the street is that we may even be able to go home on Xmas eve! What an awesome xmas present that would be!

My beautiful girls continue to surprise and delight me with the funny faces they make, their squeaky noises, the bubbles they blow and their little gazey eyes.  Just when I think I couldnt love them any more, I fall in love all over again and just that bit more.  I especially love their "kissy kissy" faces - when they pout their little lips. Sooo cute! And they also do a Joshy face, where they wrinkle up their little foreheads as they try oh so hard to open their eyes.  Love love love my baby girls.

Breastfeeding is amazing when it goes well, but we havent mastered tandem feeding.  So it totally upsets the apple cart if one decides that she isnt ready for bed after all, and starts to give hungry cues whilst I already have another baby on the boob. So overwhelming! We do sometimes try to put both on at the same time, but then one will fall off, and as I'm trying to get her back on, the other falls off, and then I have to try and get both back on, and I feel like I'm watching a ping pong match as I go back and forth between both girls, trying to see who has their mouths open wide enough. I'm hoping tandem feeding will become easier as the girls latching gets better. Fingers crossed!

Nothing worse than a crying baby (or two crying babies eeeeek!), and I can't tell what she wants. Ava was crying yesterday after 2 goes on the boob, and she was doing hungry cues, opening her mouth and moving her head around. I couldn't believe she was still hungry though as she'd had a solid go at the breast. But we put her back on (tandem) and sure enough, she wouldn't latch on. She was screaming by this stage, but I found that once she got into the feeding position (lying on her side), it seemed to give her some relief, so I'm thinking that she had a sore tummy and lying on her side or tummy fixed it.  We tried this again after another feed and it seemed to settle her pretty quickly.

Anyway, it's after 2am, so I should head back to bed. There is so much I want to write and remember about these early days, but the internet connection at the hospital is not the best. And when I do get to write it all down, I feel like my words are not sufficient to record these amazing days and moments. How do I capture these emotions I feel? I'm so scared of forgetting moments that I'd love to share with these girls when they are older. And time is flying by so quickly and lack of sleep is starting to make my mind fuzzy.

We played our baby playlist today as I breastfed and it was beautiful. I fed Ruby last and as she fell asleep in my arms, Joshy wrapped his arms around me and we swayed to the dulcet sounds of Ray Charles.  And I thought, now this is what I always thought motherhood would feel like, only this is 100 times better. So lucky to have these two beautiful baby girls in my life x

Change of plans

We showed up at the hospital at 8am, with our packed suitcase, thinking that today was the day. But instead we got turned away as they had an emergency section on the weekend and NICU was now full.

So we had a scan to make sure the bubba's are okay (doppler readings are still high, but not absent) and got their heart rates monitored for 20 mins (both were around 120 mark and OB Keira seemed happy with that).

So next plan of action is to try again on Wednesday (tomorrow). I have a definite slot this time - 3rd on the list. The main issue is still whether or not there is space in NICU. They said it would be very unlikely that we would be turned away a 2nd time, but there is still a tiny risk that it could happen.

I have to admit that I was so happy about the change of plans. Monday  felt too rushed to me and just didn't feel right. Josh says it's only 2 days, but come Wednesday, they will be 34 weeks and 5 days...that bit closer to being 35 weeks.  Oh yeah, and I'll know the team that does the surgery on Wednesday - either Keira and/or Emma.   So fingers crossed for a 5th December birthday for these two littlies!

What an emotional rollercoaster!

Last day of being pregnant: 34 wks and 2 days

Eviction notice

We got a call yesterday saying that the dr's all think it's time for the twins to come out as their growth has slowed right down. So had another steroid shot today, got some blood taken and have been told to show up on Monday for a c-section. Unfortunately, they are booked out all week, so it's just a matter of waiting around all day and hoping they don't have too many emergency surgeries so they can fit us in. Will be 34 weeks and 3 days by then, but they are still oh so tiny... We are very excited to meet the twins, but feeling a bit overwhelmed! And personally, I'm pretty nervous about the NICU experience, but starting to get my head around it. Just trying to decide how to spend our last day together as a childless couple. Clean the house or go out for the day and have a nice lunch/dinner??? :)
Seriously though, it's been an emotional couple of days. Swinging from being excited, to feeling totally unprepared, and then feeling sad that I'm not going to get the traditional/hollywood version of giving birth, with the big cuddle at the end.  And I can't help but feel like we are kicking these babies out.  To be honest, I always thought that they'd come out around the 34 week mark, and seems I'm right. But I just thought they'd decide when to come out and would let us know. So seeing as I still feel fine (albeit very pregnant, a bit achey, slow, etc), and the babies seem happy (lots of movement), I wonder if I should insist the doctors wait.  Their fluid levels are back to normal and the doppler readings, whilst higher than normal, is still not at freak out levels.  It's just that they both didn't put on much weight in the last two weeks (only around 100grams in two weeks).  But maybe it was just a bad two weeks? Argh, I wish I could just accept this decision.
We wandered down to NICU today to see what we are in for, and the receptionist told me that they don't do tours anymore, I will just have to view the NICU info video online. Which I've already seen. I promptly burst into tears, so she rushed off to find out if a NICU nurse could at least talk to me. And a lady called Angela came in and told us that we'll get to see the babies after the c-section, and they'll wheel me into NICU after I'm stitched up so I can wave to them in the incubator. And they'll wheel me down the next day, if I'm not up and walking yet.  Still not ideal, but at least they don't just get whisked away.
She still refused to show us around for privacy reasons, but wouldn't you know it, our friends from the antenatal group walked by . There babies were born at 31 weeks due to pre-eclempsia, which was 2 weeks ago. So he said we should come with him and meet his babies (Carl and Anna) and also see his wife.  It was wonderful to talk to her about her experience and see the babies. They are so tiny! But bigger than what our babies are now, as theirs were 1.5kg when born at 31 weeks (which makes me realise we need to get my babies out and growing). He had a cpap tube and a feeding tube, and his little preemie nappy was swimming on him. But they said it has been a good introduction to parenthood, as you learn things in small doses and get lots of help.  Broke my heart though when they excitedly told us they get one cuddle a day now!  Just not what I pictured birth/motherhood to be like.  But I've told my babies that this is their journey and their birth story, and hopefully Monday and the real world wont be too much of a shock for them.
I'm going to be a mama within days!!!!!!!!!!!

34 week update

How far along? 34 weeks! Woohoo!
Baby size: TW1 is 1.5kg and TW2 is 1.9kg at today's growth scan.
Babies positions: TW1 is breech with head on my left hand side (head is right under TW2’s bottom). TW2 is transverse with bottom on my left hand side and head on my right hand side.
Total weight gain/loss: current weight is 64.75kg.
Maternity clothes? Maternity clothes all the way (or leggings/baggy dresses).
Stretch marks? Yes! Just realised that what I thought was heaps of veins around my belly button are actually heaps and heaps of stretch marks.
Sleep: So hard to fall asleep. My legs get sore or restless and I toss and turn. And tossing and turning is no easy feat! My pelvis feels so unstable so changing positions in bed is scary. I try to lie on my left hand side as much as possible, but lying on my back is still the most comfortable.
Best moment this week: Shazzy helping me get ready! She helped me pack my hospital bag (which had been sitting half packed for weeks) and also rearranged the nursery so it is all set to go.  Wait, was this this week? Make that last week! This week we took the grandparents to the Auckland art gallery to check out a photography exhibition from Brooklyn, followed by dinner at Chapel bar in Ponsonby. Also got my deluxe pedicure.
Movement: Feeling kicks or little flailing arms, from both inside and outside. And rolls. And occasionally feel a hard bottom or leg or foot/ head pressed up against my tummy.  Movements get extremely full on if I have chocolate. Will have to watch them with the sugar once they are born…
Food cravings:  Chocolate and all things naughty
Anything making you queasy or sick: Nothing much
Have you started to show yet: Yes! No hiding it. Measuring 4 weeks ahead still.
Gender: Still playing the guessing game.
Symptoms: slow, walking funny, unstable pelvis, tired, restless legs, peeing all the time.
Labor Signs: No signs yet
Things I miss:  sushi and alchohol. Drinking as much tea as I want. Sleeping on my belly. Feeling energetic. And having lots of things to wear in my wardrobe. My choices are so limited these days.
Belly Button in or out? outie.
Wedding rings on or off? off
Looking forward to: My last free Sunday with Joshy.

32 weeks!

How far along? 32 weeks! Woohoo!  Good news is that they are still inside me, with no signs of coming out. Bad news is that they are still teeny tiny, so will probably need a stay in NICU even if I make it to 36 or 37 weeks
Baby size: TW1 was 1.4kg and TW2 was 1.7kg at today's growth scan.
Babies positions: TW1 is breech and sitting on my right hand side. TW2 is head down on my left hand side
Total weight gain/loss: current weight is 63.75kg.
Maternity clothes? Maternity clothes all the way (or leggings/baggy dresses).
Stretch marks? Nothing yet.
But once I fall asleep, I usually manage to sleep until the alarm goes off. Or I’ll have one pee break and that is it. Had one horrendous night where I was up 4x times in the middle of the  night (pee breaks) and then to top it off, Josh woke me up twice to tell me to stop snoring. I was so tired I may have had a little cry when the alarm finally went off.
Best moment this week: So many good moments! Having Shaza and Ian here for the weekend, Siza's bday celebrations (yum cha), Josh's birthday celebrations (waiwera hot pools/slides)
Movement: Feeling kicks or little flailing arms, from both inside and outside. And rolls. And occasionally feel a hard bottom or leg or foot/ head pressed up against my tummy.
Food cravings:  No real cravings at the moment.
Anything making you queasy or sick: Nothing much

Looking forward to: Tila's hens party this weekend. And maternity leave! Looking forward to sleep ins and nanna naps! And my facial on Monday ohh bliss

Babies positions: TW1 is breech and sitting on my right hand side. TW2 is kind transverse  with head on my left hand side..More head down now though.
Total weight gain/loss: current weight is 62.5kg.

Baby size: TW1 was 1.1kg and TW2 was 1.3kg at today’s scan. So both over 2 pounds but TW1 is below the “small but normal” range and TW2 is right on the “small but normal” line.
Babies positions: Both are breech. We had a terrible time trying to figure out who was TW1 and who was TW2. Finally figured out that TW1 is on my right hand side, leading and bottom first. TW2 is a bit higher up on my left hand side and also bottom down.
Boy do they move around a lot!
Total weight gain/loss: current weight is 61.3kg. Biggest jump in weight so far I think!
Maternity clothes? Maternity clothes all the way (or leggings/baggy dresses).
Stretch marks? Nothing yet.
Sleep: So hard to fall asleep. My legs get sore or restless and I toss and turn. And tossing and turning is no easy feat! My pelvis feels so unstable so changing positions in bed is scary. Looking forward to:
The weekend and sleeping in! And finding and reading the hypnobirthing  book. I’m gonna need all the help I can get if I have to deliver these babies naturally. Eeeep!

Sidenote:  We found out that the babies have hair! 7mm long. Oh so cute!! And we saw TW1 "practice breathing" and TW2 had hiccups, poor wee mite!

A weekend with Alysha

My gorgeous niece flew from Syd, Aus to Auckland for a quick, weekend visit. I picked her up at around 1:30am on Friday night and then we talked until about 2:40am...oh my gosh, can she talk! Long gone are the days where she would hardly say a word hahaha.

Saturday was a wee bit of a write off as we had our 4 hour antenatal class, but that night we took her with us to our mates engagement/house warming party. Here we are, in our garden before we headed to the party.

The next day, we drove to Puhoi, about 45 mins out of Auckland. Quaint little spot with a yummy cheese factory/cafe. We arrived in time for lunch, and then Alysha and Josh tried heaps of cheeses before deciding that they liked the normal brie the best.

After that, we drove down the road and stopped at the cutest, tiniest little "espicurean" shop. And tried lots of yummy jams and chutneys.

And then onto the honey cafe, where you can see the bees in action and can try heaps of different types of honey (lavender honey, chocolate honey, etc). Turns out Alysha doesn't like honey at all, but was fascinating to see the bees and their hives.

We finished off the night with a dinner at Clarence street, with Josh's parents and grandparents.

Lovely weekend and we miss Alysha so much already!

29 weeks

How far along? 29 weeks
Baby size: TW1 was 939g and TW2 was 1032g at last weeks scan. So both over 2 pounds but TW1 is now below the “small but normal” range and TW2 is right on the “small but normal” line.
Babies positions: Yin Yang position. The babies have done the old switcheroo and TW1 is now head down and TW2 is now breach.  Still looking like C-section will be the way to go as they think the babies will have to come out by 34 weeks due to the placenta not performing well, and apparently they can’t induce me at such an early stage.
Total weight gain/loss: current weight is 60.01kg. Really hoping that the weight gain means that the babies have put on weight..
I try to lie on my left hand side as much as possible, but lying on my back is still the most comfortable. But once I fall asleep, I usually manage to sleep until the alarm goes off. Or I’ll have one pee break and that is it.
Best moment this week: Our impromptu lunch in the sun at St Heliers on Wednesday. Lovely to just sit in the sun with Joshy.
Movement: Feeling kicks or little flailing arms, from both inside and outside. And rolls. And occasionally feel a hard bottom or leg or head pressed up against my tummy.
Food cravings:  No real cravings at the moment.
Anything making you queasy or sick: Nothing much

next weeks growth scan, my niece coming over for the weekend, good friends house warming/engagement party.

Weekend in Paihia

We headed off to Paihia, Bay of Islands late Friday night, and finally arrived at the Copthorne Hotel at about 11:30.  Woke up the next day to beautiful blue skies. Perfect weather for the Food and wine festival.

Josh, Harry and Andy were first up at 11:30, followed by Dirty Dozen, Soljah and the Jordan Luck Band.

Lovely day in the sun! Glad we made the most of it as the weather made a turn for the worse the next day, and was pouring down back in Auckland.

Ahh well, was nice to enjoy a teeny bit of summer!

Babies health update II

Babies health update II

  Here is the latest:

1. twin 1 is still smaller than average. And the size difference between the two is about 10%.  According to Dr Google, they only really get worried when it becomes 20%.

2. both babies still have prominent kidneys. But TW1's is measuring 5mm (down from 6mm about a month ago) and TW2's is measuring  5mm (down from 8mm about a month ago). So both are on the high side of normal...but within normal range at the moment. So Yay!

3. Getting consistently high doppler readings. Which is the measurement of resistance to blood flow through the arteries in the cord (3 arteries and readings are high in 2 out of the 3 for both babies).   This is pretty much a sign that the placenta is struggling to service both babies.

Asked about actual numbers so I can understand how freaked out I should be, and here they are:

They want the readings to be >1.
95% of population have a reading .7 or less. But mine are .8.  Personally, I don't see why we are talking about steroid shots at this stage. Really starting to think that doctors over react.

The way it works is that blood is supposed to be flowing through the cord at all times - when the heart beats, and when it is at rest. I can't remember if that's my heart or the babies hearts. But in my case, the flow slows down a lot when the heart(s) are at rest.

When it gets to 1, this means that there is no flow when the heart(s) are at rest. Should this happen when I am at say 35 or 36 weeks, they'd seriously consider getting the babies out. But if it should happen now, the babies may still be better off inside.
But babies have to come out no matter what if the reading should be over 1, as at this stage, reverse flow begins to happen.

Sidenote:
I also had my big heart scan today, and looks like it is doing really well. The leak looks like it has gotten worse, but this was expected, and is still a mild-moderate leak. And well may fix itself once I have less fluid pumping through my body.   And my heart rate has increased, but not by as much as is expected for someone in 3rd trimester of pregnancy. But all is fine if I am not feeling dizzy, faint or having heart palpitations, etc.  Guess this all has to do with my low blood pressure readings.  Not sure, but I feel fine, so wasn't too worried about the docs finding anything bad today.

28 week update!

How far along? 28 weeks
Baby size: So looks like the last growth scan may have been incorrect, cos TW1 is still measuring a bit smaller. Or this could be the 10% margin of error coming into play. Who knows. I certainly don't.  But at least they are both steadily growing. TW1 is 939g and TW2 is 1032g. So both over 2 pounds woohoo.  Keep growing my little bubba's x  And all is okay as long as growth difference is less than 20%
Babies positions: TW1 is on my left hand side and is breech (and presenting, so will have to have a c-section unless TW1 flips round).  TW2 is on right hand side, head down.
Total weight gain/loss:59.65kg. So have gained weight this week, yay! Back on track!
Maternity clothes? Maternity clothes all the way (or leggings/baggy dresses).
Stretch marks? Nothing yet.
Sleep: My pelvis feels so unstable so changing positions in bed is scary. I try to lie on my left hand side as much as possible, but lying on my back is still the most comfortable. But at least I usually sleep through the night. Not sure I can say the same for Josh what with all my snoring and coughing.
Best moment this week: Getting to 28 weeks and knowing that there'll be no talk of steroids or getting them out for at least another week phew. At this point, feels a bit like every week is an achievement.
Movement: Feeling kicks or little flailing arms, from both inside and outside. And rolls. And occasionally feel a hard bottom or leg or head pressed up against my tummy.
I was cuddling up to Josh last night and he said he was getting kicked in the back and butt hahaFood cravings:  No real cravings at the moment.
Anything making you queasy or sick: Nothing much :) Have you started to show yet: Yes! No hiding it. Measuring about 4 weeks ahead at the moment.
Gender: Uncle Steve has predicted girls, but still anyone's guess at this stage. Actually, I totally think we are having girls too. Scans once a week and not a glimmer of a little pee pee? They have to be girls. Or really good hiders/contortionists.

Symptoms: slow, walking funny, unstable pelvis, bloody nose (grr), emotional. And my feet are fat! Not swollen, they’ve just kind of flattened out.
Labor Signs: No signs yet
Things I miss:  sushi and alchohol. Drinking as much tea as I want. Sleeping on my belly. Feeling energetic. And missing water walking this week as my water walking buddy is currently recovering from hip replacement surgery.
Belly Button in or out? outie. No denying it now.

Wedding rings on or off? On
Looking forward to:
a weekend away and getting our bedroom sorted so we can move out of the lounge.

Additional check up

Last Thursday night, I missed a call from the hospital, and a random mid wife left me a voice mail saying that they'd had the team meeting and it had been decided that I needed to come in on the Monday for an additional scan. No reason why and no-one would answer my call after that....

Finally, Friday morning, the receptionist called me back and confirmed my appointment time, but couldn't tell me why I was being called back. So I asked to talk to my midwife (Sam). However, she came on the line and said she hadn't had a chance to look at my notes, so didn't know why I needed to come back in...so would call me back that arvo. Way to stress a girl out argh.

Anyway, about an hour later, she calls back and says there is nothing on my notes,  and as she was on leave last week and not at the meeting, she doesn't have any further info. But she seemed to think it may have sth to do with the kidneys. Just her guess. Hmmm, first time I haven't been happy with our care. If its not in your notes, go and talk to the people that were at the meeting!!!!! Josh had made me promise him that I wasn't going to stress, and well, I still didn't know what I was supposedly stressing about..so I didn't stress. And we had a nice weekend and didn't think about it until Monday.

Monday:
We walked into the Womens assessment unit (first time there), and we both freaked a bit when we got shown to this room, and were told to make ourselves comfortable:

Umm, so how long was I going to be staying here?  And then we got our own nurse, who checked my temperature and blood pressure. She was lovely, but it was a bit confusing when she asked us what we were there for - we were hoping she would be able to tell us!

Oh well, at least I could have a lie down, and at least the view was pretty good.

Finally, we got called in for  a scan. And turns out they were mainly focused on doing the doppler scans.  Which I don't know much about. But I'll look it all up when I get home.  And then back to our room to wait for a doctor to come and see us and tell us what the scan results were.

I got a lunch pack delivered to my room while we were waiting, which made Josh wonder if the news was really bad. Whatever. The food was good and I was starving. Cheese and tomato sandwich, orange, yummy muffin and orange juice box. Awesome!

Another hour later and a Dr that looked a lot like Liv Tyler walked in. Told us that based on last Thursdays scan, they wanted to give me steroids in case the babies had to be taken out soon. But based on today's (Monday) scan, things weren't as bad as seemed PHEW! Basically, they measure resistance of blood flow through babies cords and both babies scans showed a higher than normal level of resistance.  Which means they may not be getting enough oxygen/nutrients. And whilst its at an okay level for now, it can change super fast. And once it does, babies are better out than in.

Also, based on the babies positions, I'm currently looking at getting a c-section. This wont change unless Twin 1 flips, and also depends on their gestational age. So they want the anethesist to talk to me about my options. Just waiting for his/her call.

So basically, we are all fine and free to go home. And based on today's scan, we are sticking with one weekly scans. But they stressed that it is very likely that the babies will come early. I still feel great and I feel the babies move all the time. So I'm hoping to prove the doctors wrong, and getting to 34 or 35 weeks at least.

27 week update!

How far along? 27 weeks
Baby size: Twin 1 has caught up!!!!!  TW1 was 776g and TW2 was 781g at last weeks scan! Best news ever!
Babies positions: Yin Yang position. TW1’s head was on my right hand side and TW2’s head was on my left hand side. But then by the end, TW1 was kind of more breech position (head on my left hand side and body pointing downwards and then legs curled onto my right).
Total weight gain/loss: current weight is 59.1kg. I’ve lost weight. Not sure how that is possible especially as I’ve eaten so much cake this week. But midwife didn’t seem worried, so I guess I wont worry either.
Best moment this week: Baby shower! So spoilt!
Movement: Feeling kicks or little flailing arms, from both inside and outside. And rolls. And occasionally feel a hard bottom or leg or head pressed up against my tummy.

Food cravings:  No real cravings at the moment.
Anything making you queasy or sick: Nothing much :)
Have you started to show yet: Yes! No hiding it.

Symptoms: slow, walking funny, unstable pelvis, bloody nose again, emotional. And my feet are fat! Not swollen, they’ve just kind of flattened out. I looked down and cried out “oh my gosh, I have troll feet” and Josh rushed in to have a look and agreed.

On
Looking forward to:
next weeks growth scan and finding out if the bubba’s are still on track.

Baby shower!

My lovely friends, T & S put on an awesome baby shower for me on Sunday. They arrived about 2 and a bit hours before it was due to start, and shooed mum and I out the door.

And when we came back, there were yellow and white balloons everywhere, yellow streamers and these pom pom things that Siza had made. There was also a table full of cakes and scones that S & T had baked, and chocolate and champagne in the esky and lots of different teas (and non alchoholic champagne) for the pregnant women.

All the girls in the family came along, as well as Adam and Myke, and lots of my girlfriends. What a lovely afternoon!

Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera ready, so the photos below were taken with mum's point and shoot:

All the mothers had to try the unlabelled baby food and guess what the ingredients were. Only mum Leys got 2 out 4 right, everyone else failed miserably!

Yummy goodness! All made by Siza and T!

All the grandmothers and great grand mothers to be!

All the pregnant ladies! And Caroline, on the right is due in 9 days! I think I'll be that size in about 4 weeks! Madness :)

 Playing charades

 Little Bella!

Julie miming pooping in front of a full house. Interesting!

All the family that was at the baby shower :)

The lovely girls that made it all happen.
